In 1976, Mick Freund, his brother Harvey Freund, and Thomas Schmiedlin opened Avant. The salon has moved a small distance a couple of times, but still remains near its original location in Downtown Minneapolis. Avant joined forces with Aveda to become an Aveda Concept Salon, carrying Aveda products and implementing Aveda education for our stylists.Mick Freund and Tom Schmiedlin, co-founders of Avant Hair & Cosmetics, celebrate over 40 years of service. Our founders Mick and Tom started out as barbers back in the early 1970's, which gave them a great base for their male clientele - currently at an impressive 45% of Avant's haircutting business.

Aveda hair color offers superior permanent color that resists fading, can easily transform dark hair to light, and delivers rich color that lasts up to eight weeks. The previous statement sums up the many hair color lines Aveda offers which include: Full Spectrum permanent, Full Spectrum deposit-only, Deep for dark to light, and Shades of Enlightenment for blonding.
Need one less thing to worry about on your wedding day? Pamper yourself and your wedding party with a day of beauty at Avant. Everyone will look their best with expertly done hair and make-up. A relaxing chair massage will leave you feeling refreshed and glowing. If under the care of a dermatologist, consult prior to the appointment if waxing is recommended. Waxing areas may be more sensitive before and during your menstrual cycle. When scheduling your appointment, please make sure your facial hair is 1/8 inch long by the time of your appointment.

Hoa did an amazing job on my hair. I had a lot to cut off and he handled my hair with ease. He took into account how I style my hair as well and left it in its' natural state versus spending unnecessary time round brushing it, which I never do. He gave styling recommendations. Yea, because I'm worth it. After too many bad cuts at Great Clips, I decided paying double the money for a hair cut every five weeks was in order. Since the late summer 2021, I've had a good experience from the moment I step in the door. Very professional receptionist staff and a sharp stylist I've chosen (Kyndra). It's worth the extra money to be pampered to maintain a nice hair style.

Coming to Avant is a real treat. Melissa has been my stylist for many years and it is always nice to catch up with her while she foils and cuts my hair. Every time I visit Avant I am impressed with the professionalism of all the staff. In particular with the pandemic and the adherence to the best/required practices. The salon is spotless and constantly being cleaned, swept, etc. In addition this time of the year includes the Avant sale on in stock products. The products are second to none and to get them at a discount is great. My stylist Deborah Manshak does an amazing job. Always on time and I've never had an issues with any of the services. Love this place! The hairstylists are always super knowledgeable and will ask you about your lifestyle before cutting your hair. This has helped me grow my hair long, while keeping it healthy with regular deep conditions, and trendy with cute trims. Can't recommend this place enough, it's my happy place in the pandemic. Shout out to Kendra for being amazing!
